Camp Shoresh - By: Rabbi Tuchman

Statement from Rabbi David Finkelstein, Director of Shoresh

January 19, 2018

Shoresh has been, and will always be, a home where Jewish children can thrive. Beyond giving our campers a fun summer, we understand that they need to be in a safe environment. I wish to reiterate that we take our roles as protectors of your children very seriously and that it is our responsibility to provide that safe environment for everyone.

Regarding the referenced case of abuse, I want you to know the following:

  • Shoresh was not informed of any alleged abuse until the week AFTER camp ended in August 2015.
  • Shoresh promptly notified Frederick County Child Protective Services of the accusation and cooperated completely with all investigations related to the case.
  • The accused staff member was no longer employed at Shoresh as of that date.
  • Shoresh hired the Baltimore Child Abuse Center (BCAC) to review all the policies, procedures, staff training sessions and handbooks. They made minor recommendations which were immediately incorporated.
  • BCAC is still under contract with us and continues to facilitate the training of our staff with sessions regarding abuse, neglect, bullying, inappropriate contact and/or supervision.
  • Here is the link to the Camp Shoresh Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting Plan, as well as the entire Camp Shoresh Staff Handbook. I am proud to say that we passed our annual Maryland Department Health & Mental Hygiene camp inspection this summer with not a single infraction.

If you have any additional concerns, please call the Shoresh office at 410-358-8571 and I will be happy to follow up with you in a timely manner.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Dave
